Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ingrid Kögel-Knabner

Prof. Dr. h.c. Ingrid Kögel-Knabner, I (*1958) began studying Geoecology in Bayreuth as part of the very first cohort in 1978 and was one of the first graduates to complete the program in 1983. Even before completing my habilitation in Bayreuth, I received an appointment to the Ruhr University Bochum. Since 1995, I have held the Chair of Soil Science at the Technical University of Munich in Freising-Weihenstephan. I currently serve as Dean of the TUM School of Life Sciences.
- Question 1: What influenced you the most during your time at the University of Bayreuth?
The new and unprecedented holistic way of thinking and the systems approach in the Geoecology program. This shaped my entire scientific work. The unique community in the early years of the Geoecology program, in the laboratory, on small and large field trips (Northern Sahara! Rif Mountains!), and last but not least at the Chez bléd.
- Question 2: What excites you most about your current work?
The research opportunities combined with the freedom offered by the university. I have never wanted to trade that for any other research institution and have never regretted it, quite the opposite! I am constantly inspired by working with new colleagues and staff from all over the world. Of course, over the years one gains a lot of experience, but working with successive new generations of young people continually challenges me anew. That keeps me grounded.
- Question 3: What advice would you give to young women today for their future?
That’s a difficult question, as it’s hard to give simple advice based on my own experiences from a very different time. Perhaps this: Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by the endless possibilities and the influencers. Listen to your individual (gut) feeling to find out if something truly fits you. It has to be right for you, not just look good on social media. This applies to everyone, regardless of gender.
